Our story

The foundation was established in 1958 by Guus Kessler III, grandson of one of the founders of Royal Dutch Shell. Guus was destined to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and was expected to hold a high position at Shell. However, Guus came to faith in Jesus Christ, became a theologian, and pursued missionary work in South and Central America.

History

The story of the Urco Foundation begins in 1958. It was expected that Guus Kessler (1925-2020) would follow his father as one of the top executives at Shell. But Guus' life took a different turn when he came to faith and chose a life as a missionary in Central America.

When part of the inheritance became available, he decided to invest his wealth to use the annual proceeds to financially support other missionaries. This marked the beginning of the Urco Foundation, which grew into a wonderful organization that has supported countless missionaries and others around the world.

Guus Kessler passed away in 2020 at the age of 94. Building on the vision of Guus Kessler, the foundation maintains a core capital in the form of investments, the proceeds of which are used annually to achieve the foundation’s goal: "Urco Foundation blesses unique ministries worldwide that make disciples to the glory of God and for the expansion of His Kingdom."
